Trachycarpus wagnerianus, often simply called Wagner palm, is an elegant and very popular fan palm belonging to the family Arecaceae (Palms family).
This is an evergreen, slow-growing palm tree known for its robust, compact form and excellent hardiness. This palm is distinguished from the better known Trachycarpus fortunei by its short, stiff and dark green fan-shaped leaves that give it a symmetrical, "bonsai-like" appearance. Because of this rigidity, it is very wind resistant, making it ideally suited to windy sites and the Dutch climate. The trunk is slender and covered with brown fibers. The palm tolerates temperatures down to about -15°C to -18°C (especially in open ground and dry conditions).
Appearance
Trachycarpus wagnerianus has a slender, fiber-covered trunk and a compact, round crown of fan-shaped, dark green leaves. The leaves are relatively small, stiff and very sturdy, making them resistant to wind and giving the plant an elegant, almost formal appearance.
Location
The Wagner palm is an easy palm that thrives in many places. It prefers a sunny spot to semi-shade. The plant can be placed indoors or outdoors in the open ground or in a pot. The palm grows well in both cool and humid conditions and is perfect for gardens, patios and balconies.
Water Demand
This palm has moderate to reasonable water requirements. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Especially in summer, in hot weather, it needs regular watering (possibly daily in pots). Always ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, as the palm does not like 'wet feet'. In winter, reduce watering considerably.
