The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known in the Netherlands as the Chinese fan palm or Hemp palm, is a robust and majestic palm belonging to the family Arecaceae (Palms family). This is an evergreen, fast-growing tree loved worldwide for its impressive appearance and exceptional hardiness. The palm develops a long, straight trunk covered with coarse brown fibers, giving it a rustic texture. A lush crown of large, fan-shaped and deeply incised leaves forms atop the trunk. It is one of the most suitable hardy palms for the European climate, as it experiences temperatures up to about -17°C to -18°C can tolerate.
Appearance
Trachycarpus fortunei is known for its thick, straight trunk that is covered with dense, brown fibers. From the top grow large, fan-shaped leaves attached to long petioles. These leaves are dark green in color and form a lush, somewhat tangled crown that creates an exotic atmosphere in any outdoor space.
Location
The Chinese fan palm is a strong outdoor plant that is not picky about its location. It thrives best in a sunny spot to partial shade. Although the palm is quite hardy, a position out of the wind is recommended, otherwise the leaves can be damaged more quickly. It is well suited for the full ground, but can also be placed in a large pot and survives the Dutch winters outside.
Water Demand
This palm has moderate water requirements and likes slightly moist, but well-drained soil. Especially during hot summer months, the soil should not dry out completely; water regularly. In the winter months, when the palm is dormant, you should greatly reduce watering to prevent the root ball from becoming too wet and causing frost damage. Always ensure good drainage to avoid root rot.
