The Olea Europaea Bonsai, or olive tree in bonsai form, belongs to the Olive family (Oleaceae) and is the botanically identical species to the traditional olive tree. This variety is distinguished by its controlled and stylized growth, making it a unique, living work of art.

Characteristics: It is an evergreen, very slow growing tree. What makes the Bonsai form unique is the exceptionally thick, old trunk (nine years or older) that is whimsically and architecturally shaped. This gives the tree a monumental appearance, as if it were centuries old. The crown consists of its distinctive silvery-green foliage, carefully pruned to maintain a dense, compact form. The tree is popular for its ornamental value and high tolerance to drought.

The Olea Europaea Bonsai is a rare and spectacular eye-catcher. The emphasis is on the imposing, massive trunk base and the often twisted, weathered trunk. The tree exudes history and functions as a natural sculpture. The leaves are narrow and oblong, with the classic dark green top and silvery underside. With a height of 270 cm and a pot diameter of 80 cm, this is a very large and mature specimen.

Like its traditional counterparts, the olive tree bonsai is a true sun lover and requires a sunny, warm and sheltered location to thrive. A minimum of six hours of direct sunlight per day is essential. Because of its large size, it is often used as a solitary eye-catcher. Although the tree tolerates some frost (down to about -7), the unprotected root ball in the pot requires additional, adequate protection or overwintering in a cold greenhouse or garage during severe frosts.

Given its large pot and maturity, water requirements are significant during the growing season. However, good drainage is vital to prevent root rot, especially in a plant of this value. Water the tree regularly in spring and summer, and allow the top layer of potting soil to dry out between waterings. Less watering is necessary in the winter period.
