This set of Large Yew Plants (Taxus baccata) has been specially compiled for creating an immediate, high-quality hedge over a length of 10 linear meters. The yew, also known as the poison tree, is one of the most valued and durable hedge plants in Western Europe. It is a native, evergreen conifer that excels in its dense branching and excellent pruning tolerance.

Features: The plants supplied are already of a considerable height(100-125 cm) and have a large root ball (12L pots), which ensures quick and successful establishment of the hedge. The yew is one of the few conifers that tolerates vigorous pruning back to the old wood, making it easy to keep in shape as a neat, formal hedge. It is extremely hardy and provides privacy and structure in the garden all year round.

Appearance icon Appearance

Taxus baccata has a classic, dense appearance, ideal for a formal hedge. The plants have dark green, glossy, needle-like leaves that are soft to the touch and grow close together. This provides the desired high visual density, even in winter. The trunk and branches are flexible and tough. These large specimens are already beautifully branched and have a full, bushy growth habit up to the delivery height, which immediately forms a substantial hedge. In autumn and winter, the female plants can bear striking, bright red berries. Please note: all parts of the Taxus, except for the red flesh of the berry, are poisonous if ingested.

Location icon Location

The yew is exceptionally versatile in terms of its location. It tolerates full sun, partial shade, and even deep shade, which makes it unique among hedge conifers. However, the plant does have high soil requirements: the soil must be well-drained, as the yew is very sensitive to 'wet feet' (standing in soil that is too wet), which quickly leads to root rot. Fertile, humus-rich and preferably calcareous soil is ideal. Its robust structure means that it can be planted in full wind.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

After planting, Taxus plants require a crucial period of watering to establish good roots, especially during the first two growing seasons. The key is balanced moisture. The soil should be moist, but absolutely not waterlogged. Ensure good drainage to prevent water accumulation. Water generously during dry periods in summer and early spring (when the plant starts to grow), but allow the soil to aerate well between waterings. Once the plants are established, their water requirements are moderate.
