The rusting process of
corten steel

Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a specially developed type of steel that forms a protective rust layer. So this means you receive a product, which has not yet rusted. The process of rusting begins with the unique composition of the steel, in which elements such as phosphorus, copper, chromium and nickel are added to iron. When Corten steel is exposed to the elements, it begins to rust through oxidation, just like regular steel. In this process, the iron particles react with oxygen and moisture in the air, leading to the formation of iron oxide or rust.
The distinctive aspect of Corten steel is the development of a tight and relatively thick rust layer that slows further oxidation. This passivation layer acts as a protective barrier, making it harder for oxygen and moisture to penetrate the material. Moreover, Corten steel has a self-healing ability; if the rust layer is damaged, it repairs itself through further oxidation, forming a new protective layer. This self-healing ability contributes to the durability of the material.
The final rust layer gives Corten steel a unique, weathered aesthetic that is often appreciated in architecture and art and thus fits your garden exactly. At the same time, this protective layer extends the life of the steel by protecting it from further corrosion. The rusting process can range from several months to years, depending on environmental factors such as humidity and exposure to rain.

Placement advice
When placing your new planter, keep in mind that it needs at least 1 inch of breathing room to avoid moisture trapping. Once your planter has the perfect spot, you can begin filling it. Start with a layer of pebbles about 10 cm high. Place a moisture-permeable anti-root cloth over the pebbles. Finally, fill with soil that matches your flowers or plants, being careful not to tamp the soil while filling.
