The Chamaerops Humilis, often referred to in Dutch as the European dwarf palm Whether the Fan palm, is the only palm species native to Europe. This species belongs to the palm family (Arecaceae).

It is an evergreen, multi-stemmed palm that falls under the category of Mediterranean and exotic plants. It is a robust and bushy palm that often develops multiple trunks from the base. It has distinctive, fan-shaped leaves and is popular for its relatively good hardiness in temperate climates.

Appearance icon Appearance

Chamaerops Humilis is distinguished by its stiff, fan-shaped leaves that range from blue-green to deep green. The leaves are deeply incised and form a dense, bushy crown. The stems are fibrous, relatively slender and often covered with brown remnants of old petioles. The plant usually grows multiple stems from the base, giving it a full, bushy appearance.

Location icon Location

The European Dwarf Palm thrives best in a spot with plenty of direct sunlight but also tolerates light shade. It has few soil requirements, as long as the soil is well-drained. It can be placed both as a tub plant on a terrace, in the open ground (in a sheltered, well-draining place) and in a light conservatory or living room.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

The Chamaerops Humilis is a drought-tolerant palm. In the summer months, the soil may be kept slightly moist, but it is crucial that the soil be allowed to dry thoroughly between waterings in the pot or in the open ground. In winter, especially when the plant is cooler, watering should be drastically reduced to prevent root rot.
