6 Tips for maintaining your steel garden products

Maintenance tips steel garden products

Whether you are an experienced garden designer or just starting to modify your outdoor space, preserving your new (or old) products is essential. Corten steel and powder-coated steel are popular choices for garden designs because of their specific properties, durability, and appearance. Yet regular maintenance can make the difference between a product that looks great for years and one that loses its charm. In this blog, read 6 tips on maintaining your corten steel & powder coated products so they stay extra beautiful, season after season.

General maintenance

All Planters of Steel products are made of high-quality materials, and require almost no maintenance. Still, there are a few things that can help you keep the products in excellent condition:

1. Create breathing room: When placing your steel products, make sure to stay 1 cm away from other surfaces. This will prevent moisture trapping, which can lead to irregular stains.

2. Cleaning: Polish your steel products once a year with a soft brush. This helps remove dust, dirt and any salt deposits that may accumulate.

3. Remove leaves: Ensure that leaves and other organic material are not in prolonged contact with the steel. Wet leaves retain moisture when it is against the Corten steel or powder coating, this can cause staining.

4. Chemicals: When maintaining your corten steel garden products, do not use chemicals or acids; these will damage the protective layer. Would you still like to clean? Then use clean tap water or a mild soap.

Corten steel maintenance

1 of the advantages of corten steel is that it requires little maintenance. But with these 2 tips, you can ensure that your corten steel products will stay beautiful for extra long.

1. Location: We do not recommend placing Corten steel products within 2 kilometers of the coastline. The salty climate combined with high humidity can accelerate the rusting process and reduce the effect of the protective layer.

2. Winter Tip: Corten steel can withstand all weather conditions, but when it snows or freezes, make sure the corten steel does not come into direct contact with road salt.

Stopping rusting of corten steel

Corten steel is known for its characteristic layer of rust that not only provides the color but also serves as a protective layer. Because this is an ongoing process, the color also keeps changing. But would you rather have a little more control over the color of your corten steel planter or border edging? Then you can take matters into your own hands and slow down the rusting process. With Owatrol oil, you can greatly slow down the rusting process. The oil also stops the corten steel from giving off rust water.

Easy maintenance corten steel & powder coated

All in all, steel products do not require much maintenance to maintain a beautiful appearance. But by cleaning regularly with a soft brush and water, Corten steel and powder-coated products retain their protective layer and prevent damage.
