Sagina subulata, also known as Irish moss, is an excellent and popular evergreen ground cover that is highly valued for its unique, moss-like appearance. This variety is distinguished by its extremely low and dense carpet-forming growth habit, making it the ideal choice for filling joints between stepping stones, embellishing rock gardens, or as a soft and walkable alternative to a traditional lawn.

Characteristics: Sagina subulata retains its fresh green color throughout the year, ensuring a continuous vibrant appearance in the garden. It is hardy, robust, and has the great advantage of being very low maintenance. In late spring and summer, the green carpet is adorned with countless small white flowers that provide a subtle and charming accent. Thanks to its dense structure, it forms a soft, green filling that fits perfectly in Japanese gardens or modern, sleek garden designs.

Appearance icon Appearance

Sagina subulata is characterized by its very fine, needle-like leaves that together form a lush and soft cushion. Despite its name, it is not actually moss, but a flowering perennial that grows to a height of only 2 to 5 centimeters. During the flowering period in summer, tiny white star-shaped flowers appear that protrude above the green bed. Tip: For optimal results between stepping stones, you can press the plants down lightly at the beginning; as soon as they touch the ground, they quickly form a continuous and sturdy carpet.

Location icon Location

This moss-like ground cover is an ideal candidate for a spot in full sun to partial shade. Although it can tolerate a lot of sun, it is important that the soil does not dry out completely. Sagina subulata grows best in well-drained, sandy or humus-rich soil. It is particularly suitable for paths that are occasionally walked on, as the plant can tolerate light foot traffic.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

Sagina subulata has average water requirements. Because the plant has shallow roots, it is essential that the soil remains slightly moist at all times, especially during hot summer months or in very sunny locations. Once well established, it is fairly robust, but it retains its beautiful fresh green color and soft texture best when not exposed to extreme drought.
