Shade-loving ground cover

Blue / Purple (with yellow variegated leaves)

Vinca minor 'Blue and Gold' is an excellent and popular evergreen ground cover, often regarded as one of the most colorful varieties for the shade garden. This variety is distinguished by its striking golden yellow leaf pattern, making it perfect for brightening dark corners or creating a lively contrast in borders and underplanting.

Features: The 'Blue and Gold' retains its shiny, variegated gold leaves throughout the year, providing continuous structure and warm color in the garden. It is very hardy, robust, and has the great advantage of effectively suppressing weeds due to its dense growth habit. In addition to its decorative foliage, it treats you to vibrant blue-purple flowers in the spring. Its compact growth also makes it very easy to maintain; it requires little attention to look fresh all year round.

Appearance icon Appearance

Vinca minor 'Blue and Gold' is a visual eye-catcher thanks to the combination of bright blue flowers and golden yellow edged or spotted leaves. The plant blooms profusely in April and May, with the blue-purple hue contrasting beautifully with the warm leaf color. The plant grows low and compact, usually between 10 and 15 centimeters high, forming a continuous, colorful carpet.

This variegated periwinkle thrives best in partial shade to shade. Although it can tolerate sun, its striking foliage is at its best in partial shade; too much bright afternoon sun can burn the light-colored leaf edges. The plant is not picky about soil type, but prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil in which it can spread undisturbed.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

The Blue and Gold has average water requirements. It is important to keep the soil slightly moist, especially when newly planted and during hot, dry periods. Once well established in the garden, the plant is quite resistant to dry periods, especially when planted in a cool, shady spot.
