Cornus canadensis, also known as the Canadian dogwood, is an excellent and popular evergreen ground cover plant that is valued for its natural appearance and graceful flowering. This variety is distinguished by its low, creeping growth habit, making it the ideal choice for creating lush ground cover in shady gardens, parks, or as a refined addition to borders.

Features: The Canadian dogwood retains its glossy green leaves throughout the year, providing continuous structure and vibrancy in the garden. It is highly winter hardy and has the great advantage of attracting butterflies and bees thanks to its attractive white inflorescences. Its compact nature also makes it very easy to maintain; it forms a natural carpet that fits perfectly in a wooded garden setting or in cool, shady areas.

Appearance icon Appearance

Cornus canadensis is characterized by whorls of shiny, egg-shaped leaves that remain close to the ground. In late spring and early summer, striking white inflorescences appear, which actually consist of four white bracts surrounding a cluster of small, inconspicuous flowers. After flowering, the plant often develops decorative red berries that add extra color to the fall garden. The plant reaches a modest height of about 4 to 8 inches.

Location icon Location

This dogwood is an ideal candidate for a spot in shade to partial shade. Because it originally grows in wooded areas, it thrives best in a cool, moist environment. The plant prefers acidic to neutral, humus-rich soil. It is a perfect plant for covering the ground under larger shrubs or trees, where it benefits from natural shelter.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

Cornus canadensis has moderate to high water requirements. It is essential that the soil remains constantly slightly moist, especially during hot summer months or in areas with a lot of root competition from large trees. A good layer of mulch or compost helps to keep the soil cool and moist, which benefits the growth and appearance of the fresh green foliage.
