Evergreen ground covers

Bronze / Green

Leptinella squalida, also known as copper button, is an excellent and popular evergreen ground cover that is highly valued for its unique fern-like texture. This variety is distinguished by its extremely low and carpet-forming growth habit, making it the ideal choice for filling joints between stepping stones, embellishing rock gardens, or as a lush filler in difficult garden corners.

Characteristics: Copperleaf keeps its fine, feathery leaves all year round, providing continuous structure and a unique carpet effect in the garden. It is hardy, robust, and has the great advantage of being very resistant to foot traffic, which is why it is often used on walkways. Thanks to its dense growth, it quickly forms a continuous mat that gives weeds little chance, especially in areas where a finer structure is desired than with traditional ground covers.

Appearance icon Appearance

Leptinella squalida is characterized by its very fine, deeply incised leaves, reminiscent of tiny ferns. Its color is an interesting bronze-green, which gives the garden a natural and authentic look. The plant grows to a height of only 3 to 5 centimeters and spreads via creeping rhizomes, creating a very even and dense carpet. In summer, inconspicuous, small yellow flower buds appear that resemble buttons, from which the plant derives its Dutch name. Tip: Because this plant remains so low and forms a dense mat, it is the perfect partner for small bulbous plants such as snowdrops; the bulbs grow effortlessly through it in the spring.

Location icon Location

This fern-like ground cover is an ideal candidate for a spot in partial shade to shade, although it can tolerate sun provided the soil is moist enough. Leptinella thrives best in moist, well-drained, humus-rich areas, such as under trees or between stones. The plant is also very popular in rock gardens because of its ability to beautifully follow the contours of the ground and stones.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

Leptinella squalida has moderate to high water requirements. It is essential that the soil never dries out completely, especially in warmer locations. The plant likes constantly moist soil in order to maintain its lush green carpet and fine leaf structure. Regular watering during dry summer months is therefore recommended for best results.
