Cornus canadensis, also known as the Canadian dogwood, is an excellent and popular creeping ground cover that is highly valued for its natural appearance and seasonal variation. This variety is distinguished by its unique white inflorescences and vigorous underground runners, making it the ideal choice for creating lush ground cover in shady gardens, parks, or as a complement to borders.

Features: The Canadian dogwood retains its glossy green leaves throughout the growing season and is semi-evergreen to evergreen, ensuring a continuously vibrant appearance. It is very hardy, robust, and has the great advantage of attracting butterflies and bees during its flowering period. In late summer, the plant is adorned with striking red berries, which not only make it decorative but also provide a food source for birds. Thanks to its low growth, it is a reliable choice for a low-maintenance garden with a wooded character.

Appearance icon Appearance

Cornus canadensis is characterized by clusters of shiny, deeply veined green leaves that grow close to the ground. In May and June, unusual inflorescences appear: small greenish flowers surrounded by four large, snow-white bracts that resemble real flowers. After flowering, clusters of bright red, edible (but rather tasteless) berries form. The plant grows to an average height of 10 to 20 centimeters and, thanks to its rhizomes, eventually forms a continuous green carpet. Tip: Because this plant likes acidic soil, you can mix some garden peat into the planting hole when planting to stimulate growth and bright white flowering.

Location icon Location

This dogwood is an ideal candidate for a spot in shade to partial shade. Cornus canadensis likes to mimic its natural habitat: cool forest soil. It therefore thrives best in humus-rich, acidic, and moist soil. It is the perfect plant for spots under trees or larger shrubs (such as rhododendrons), where its white bracts beautifully brighten up the dark corners of the garden.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

Cornus canadensis has moderate to high water requirements. It is essential that the soil never dries out completely, as the plant is sensitive to heat and dry feet. Regular watering is necessary after planting to promote establishment. Once established, it retains its fresh, vital appearance best when the soil remains constantly slightly moist.
