Nerium Oleander belongs to the family Virgin Palm family (Apocynaceae) and is a classic Mediterranean flowering plant. Although native to the Mediterranean region, the plant has become popular worldwide for its long flowering period and exotic appearance.

Characteristics: It is an evergreen, fast-growing shrub or, in this case, a plant raised on a single, sturdy stem. The crown is dense and bushy. The Oleander is best known for its abundant blooms throughout the summer. This specimen produces dainty, fragrant, pale pink to deep pink flowers. All parts of the plant are poisonous when ingested.

Appearance icon Appearance

This is a Nerium Oleander grown into a decorative tree on a trunk. The trunk is straight and sturdy, topped by a compact, spherical crown of long, narrow, leathery, dark green leaves. Its true ornamental value lies in its flowering: the plant produces clusters of beautiful pink flowers at the tips of its branches from June well into September, providing a rich and long-lasting color accent throughout the summer.

Location icon Location

The Oleander is extremely sun-loving and thrives best in the warmest and sunniest spot you can provide. It tolerates heat and full sun extremely well. Place it on a patio, balcony or in the garden in a spot where it receives plenty of sunlight. The Oleander is not hardy; at the first signs of frost, move the plant to a cool, light, frost-free winter storage area (such as a garage or greenhouse) to protect the trunk and roots.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

The Oleander, especially during flowering and hot summer days, needs a lot of water. Unlike many other Mediterranean plants, the Oleander tolerates damp feet and can use a large amount of water regularly even in summer. Be sure to keep the potting soil consistently moist. In winter, when the plant is indoors, watering should be drastically reduced.
