Evergreen ground covers

Vinca minor 'Gertrude Jekyll' is an excellent and popular evergreen ground cover, often regarded as the most elegant white variety of its kind. This variety is distinguished by its compact and dense growth habit, making it perfect for creating a brightly lit carpet of plants in shady borders or as refined underplanting for darker shrubs.

Features: 'Gertrude Jekyll' retains its small, glossy, deep green leaves throughout the year, providing continuous structure and a neat appearance in the garden. It is very hardy, robust, and has the great advantage of brightening up dark corners with its numerous snow-white flowers. Its controlled growth also makes it very easy to maintain; it forms a dense mat that effectively suppresses weeds without crowding out other garden plants.

Appearance icon Appearance

Vinca minor 'Gertrude Jekyll' stands out for its refined appearance. The leaves are slightly smaller and narrower than those of the average periwinkle, which contributes to its compact look. In spring, from April to June, the plant blooms profusely with pure white, star-shaped flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark green foliage. The plant grows to a height of about 10 centimeters and forms a neat, even green carpet.

This white periwinkle is an ideal choice for a spot in partial shade to shade. In places with more sunlight, the plant will produce more flowers, provided the soil does not dry out completely. In the shade, the leaves retain their most beautiful color. 'Gertrude Jekyll' thrives in almost any type of soil, but prefers a nutritious, humus-rich soil that drains well.

Water requirement icon Water Demand

The 'Gertrude Jekyll' has average water requirements. It is essential to keep the soil moist immediately after planting so that the plant can establish itself properly. Once established, the plant is highly resistant to drier conditions in the shade. During hot summer months, it is advisable to water occasionally to maintain the fresh, green appearance of the foliage.
